On November 30th, 2016, at approximately 10:18am, Sheriff’s Deputies, along with Sykesville Police, responded to the area of Rt 32 and Springfield Avenue for a three vehicle collision involving a Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Deputy.
The initial investigation indicates that a Nissan Titan, driven by Theodore Pierre Ely, 49 years old from Union Bridge, was travelling South on Rt 32 when the driver lost control and crossed the center line. The vehicle collided with Deputy First Class Brett Etzler’s marked Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle, which was travelling Northbound, sending it off of the roadway. A third vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Ziad Bader, 45 years old from Sykesville, was following Deputy Etzler Northbound on Rt 32 and was also struck by the Nissan. There were no reported injuries to the driver or passengers of the Tahoe.
Deputy First Class Brett Etzler and Theodore Ely were both transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center by ambulance. Their injuries are not considered life threatening.
All three vehicles were towed. No signs of impairment were observed during the initial investigation. Any potential charges will be determined at the conclusion of the investigation.
